  • Once upon a time in a small village, lived a teenager named Lara. But her existence was a tale of sorrow and hardship, for she had been torn from her mother's embrace at a tender age, and condemned to a life of servitude under the roof of her cruel uncle and his harsh wife.

Each day dawned with a heavy burden upon Lara’s frail shoulders, her hands calloused from endless toil and her stomach hollow with hunger. Her clothes, mere rags stitched together with threads of despair, bore witness to the cruelty that had seeped into every crevice of her being.

One fateful morning, as the sun painted the sky with hues of gold and crimson, Lara was tasked with a journey to a distant stream to fetch water, while her lazy and spoilt cousin, Elea slept luxuriously. With weary steps, she trudged along the winding path, her heart heavy with the weight of her burdens.

But fate had other plans in store for Lara that day, for as she reached the banks of the stream, she stumbled upon an old woman, her frail form bent with age and weariness. Moved by compassion, Lara offered her assistance, her heart a beacon of light in the darkness that shrouded them both.

Together, they made their way to the old woman's humble abode, where gratitude blossomed like a fragile flower in the desert. In return for Lara’s kindness, the old woman bestowed upon her a gift beyond measure: a magic flute, whispered to grant any wish its bearer desired.

  • Now that she was so close to him, Angel finally had the chance to study his face.

Nose, lips, jaw and every line on his face. just...perfect. There's no other word to describe it. Even though he wore a mask, she could still see his gray eyes through them and they were truly mesmerizing. She felt as if, if she get close enough, his eyes would suck her in like quicksand, with no way out, and she felt like that was what was happening to her at that moment.

"Penny for your thoughts?" The man finally spoke, bringing her out of her trance.

Angel quickly regained her composure as she replied: "I didn't expect you to take me to a party like this.

"You don't like it?" He asked.

"I wouldn't say that, but... "It's my first time attending a party like this so I feel a bit overwhelmed," she admitted and he flashed a sweet, enchanting smile, showing off his super-perfect white teeth. If only his eyes were smiling too.

“Indeed, you have proven yourself very well. You have definitely exceeded my expectations," he whispered. His breath touched her skin, electrifying her nerves, to the point where she almost forgot to breathe. His voice seemed to have some kind of magic as it lingered in her ears.

But the fact that she was wrong to think that he was not yet attracted to her was enough to awaken Angel's dizzy nerves. However, the expression that was about to appear on her face disappeared as soon as she heard what he said next.

"But not yet, you haven't passed the test yet," he said and Angel immediately Open her eyes and looked at him.

    "Ehh? What do you mean?"

"You still have one last test to take. Angel sighed before looking at him again. “Okay, then tell me what it is.” She said, looking attentive and determined.

Her seemingly unshakable determination made him narrow his eyes. “Are you sure?”

    “Yes.”

For a moment, the man didn't move or make a sound, hearing a solid one-word answer from her, but in the next second, he pulled her into the elevator and took her to the top floor of the hotel. He remained silent and Angel couldn't help but feel her heart begin to beat rapidly.

Then the two entered the luxurious presidential suite. Long, thick velvet curtains hung on the walls and covered the windows, blocking all light from entering. The large living room is scattered with expensive furniture, tables, chairs and couches. There was a bar at one end, filled with expensive bottles of alcohol, and a room at the other end.

The man stopped after entering and Angel closed the door behind her. Then he turned to look at her.

He stretched out his arms and leaned against the door with her trapped between them. He looked at her then waved the keycard in front of her face.

"I'll put this here," he said and placed the keycard on the table next to the door. “You can leave after you change your mind,” he added, smiling mischievously again.

Angel tried to suppress the urge to swallow. He did it again, taunting her to change her mind. Somehow, every time he did this, it only made Angel more determined. She knew he was trying to make her change her mind, but what he did strangely had the opposite effect on her.

This time she didn't answer. She's already there. No matter what challenge he gave her, from now on, she would never change her mind.

Seeing that the girl did not flinch, the man raised his hand and touched her. her hand.

"Are you scared?" he whispered and the girl quickly answered “No”, making the man laugh. He looked at her one last time before holding her hand and pulling her towards the bedroom……

  • 'However you want to do it, I don't know; just make sure you are not posted to Abuja. It is not a very good place. You can go to any other location o, but Abuja? Don't try it!'

This was the advice a 'very dear' friend of my mom gave her when it was time for posting. My mother worked in the Federal ministry till she retired, so transfers were inevitable.

Somehow, God had other plans in mind and posting to Abuja seemed to be one of them. This was around the year 1999 when Abuja was like London... It's been a while I visited so I don't know if it is still as beautiful as we left it.

My innocent mom was scared. There was no place she didn't go to plead for a change in posting but God had His plans and so with a heavy heart, my mother packed her bags, accompanied by one of my elder sisters for comfort, bought tickets from those luxurious bus services and began her journey to the 'land of doom,' Abuja, with the first bus. Those days, there were no mobile phones but the roads were very safe and good.

We bade her goodbye forlornly like someone that was going to a land of no return. Even my father that had been forming King Kong earlier used style to wipe his tears (though he told me that it was fly that entered his eyes), but we had no choice. Go to Abuja or resign, the letter said.

After what seemed like eternity, my sister called from a phone booth in the park around five in the evening. They had arrived in Abuja and were about to board a cab to their destination. She promised to look around for a pay phone to call us the next morning.

She called us in the afternoon after a visit to my mother's 'dear' friend's office.

The same doomsayer about Abuja was having a sumptuous lunch in her grandeur office when my mother walked in unannounced. She hadn't been aware about the transfer, so my mother was the last person she had been expecting to see.

'Ha!' She shouted in surprise as soon as she saw my mother. Her face went through series of emotions before she managed to utter 'What are you doing here?' She was so shocked that she was almost speechless all through their stay.

We were stupefied to hear how beautiful the city was. Turned out that all she told us about Abuja was the extreme opposite! Light was so steady that there used to announcement on radio if there was going to be power cut. To cap it up, this woman had properties in that same 'horrible' Abuja and was living in splendour.

My mother's shock was over- shocked! How someone could be that evil still amazes me till date. No wonder people kept asking us if we were normal whenever we prayed against Abuja transfer. I still wonder what people stand to gain by blocking others. She depicted Abuja as a barren land whereas it was flowing with milk and honey!

It taught me a very valuable lesson; not all friends have your interests at heart; only God does.

  • True life story

Once upon a time, there lived a very rich and wealthy man in a big town. He led a luxurious life. He always boasted about his wealth to his friends and relatives.

His son was studying in a distant city and he returned home for vacation. The rich man wanted to show off to his son how rich he was. But his son wasn't fond of any luxurious lifestyle. However, the rich man wanted to make his son realize that his lifestyle was extremely rich and that poor people suffered a lot. He planned a day's visit to the entire town to show him the life of the poor people.

The father and the son took a chariot and visited the entire town. They returned home after two days. The father was happy that his son was very quiet after seeing the poor people honouring the rich man and after witnessing the sufferings of the poor due to lack of facilities.

The rich man asked his son, "Dear boy, how was the trip? Have you enjoyed it?"

"Yes my dad, it was a great trip with you," the son replied.

"So, what did you learn from the trip?" the father asked.

    The son was silent.

"Finally you have realized how the poor suffer and how they actually live," said the father.

"No father," replied the son. He added, "We have only two dogs, they have 10 dogs. We have a big pool in our garden, but they have a massive bay without any end! We have luxurious and expensive lights imported from various countries, but they have countless stars lighting their nights. We have a house on a small piece of land, but they have abundant fields that go beyond the horizon. We are protected by huge and strong walls around our property, but they bond with each other and surround themselves with their fellow beings. We have to buy food from them, but they are so rich that they can cultivate their own food."

The rich father was stunned and speechless, on hearing his son's words.

Finally the son added, "Dad, thank you so much for showing me who is rich and who is poor. Thank you for letting me understand how poor we really are!"

True wealth is not measured by money and property! True wealth is created in good friendships and compassionate relationships.

Wealth cannot lift you from Earth to heaven, remember we are both equally and our end is from the six feet beneath .
