  • Nigeria's most recognized artifacts are the Benin Bronzes.

The Benin Bronzes are a collection of over 1,000 intricate bronze plaques and other artifacts that were looted by British colonial forces during the Benin Expedition of 1897. They originated from the Benin Empire (present-day Edo State, Nigeria) and date back to the 13th-16th centuries.

The Benin Bronzes are renowned for their exceptional craftsmanship, historical significance, and cultural importance. They depict various aspects of Benin royal life, mythology, and daily activities, providing valuable insights into Nigeria's rich cultural heritage.

Some notable examples of the Benin Bronzes include:

    1. The Oba's head
    2. Queen Mother Idia's ivory mask
    3. Bronze plaques depicting royal ceremonies
    4. Portable altars

Efforts are ongoing to repatriate the Benin Bronzes from museums worldwide, particularly in the UK, back to Nigeria, acknowledging their cultural ownership and significance.

The equipment was received by the Joint Task Force North East (JTF NE) Theatre Commander, Major General Wahidi Shaibu, at a handover ceremony in Maiduguri.

Speaking at the ceremony, Colonel Martin Leach, the deputy head of British Defence Staff (West Africa) & Commander British Military Training Teams in Nigeria, said:

“I am delighted to be here today to hand over this equipment and mark another development in the strong partnership between the United Kingdom and Nigeria. The UK stands with Nigeria in the continued fight against violent extremist organisations in the North East.”

Seven further courses will be delivered between now and February 2025, focussing on training Nigerian Army personnel in the specialist skills required for future operations in the North East of Nigeria.

In addition, the UK currently has personnel attached temporarily to the Theatre Counter-IED Coordination Cell in Maiduguri, working with their Nigerian counterparts to develop intelligence on the terror networks that are killing civilians and soldiers with IEDs.
