Former Niger Delta militant leader, Asari Dokubo, has revealed that President Bola Tinubu saved him from former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s attempt to “bury him alive.”

Dokubo made this disclosure on Arise TV’s Morning Show, on Tuesday.

The chieftain recounted his long-standing relationship with Tinubu, which he said dates back to the military era.

According to Dokubo: “I supported Mr. President because I knew him before he became senator, president, and, God willing, I will also know him when he ceases to be president. But this is not about me or Tinubu; it’s about my people.

“When I’m speaking about my people, take me out of the way; I’m an individual. My relationship with Tinubu was very robust, and at all times, the benefit I derived from that relationship was one-way traffic, which was from Tinubu alone.

“His coming out for the presidency was the only time I was able to pay him back, and I did. If he comes out tomorrow, I will still do it because, at the time, Obasanjo buried me alive, but he stood by me. I won’t forget in a hurry.”

The presidency also submitted that some of the bold reforms Obasanjo lacked the courage to implement are what President Bola Tinubu has set in motion for the good of the country.

The presidency also chided Obasanjo, asking him to stop seeing himself as the only saviour of Nigeria.

The statement by Temitope Ajayi, the Senior Special Assistant to President Tinubu on Media and Publicity, comes as a direct response to an interview by Obasanjo in which the former Nigerian leader, in an interview with News Central Television, made a veiled reference in which he accused Tinubu of coming to power without any plan.

Ajayi, however, in his statement, defended the policies of the Tinubu government, saying Tinubu is displaying the courage to do what Obasanjo failed to do twenty years ago

“A video of former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s interview with News Central Television has been trending on social media platforms for the past week. In the interview, the former President, in a veiled reference to the current administration, said Nigeria has a President who came into office without a plan. Yet, the same ‘planless’ president is implementing a bold economic reform programme that Obasanjo initiated and abandoned mid-way.

He explained further that contrary to Obasanjo’s submission, President Tinubu came into office with the Renewed Hope Agenda and has been implementing it since May 2023.

Earlier, President Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, said his principal is rectifying the mistake of the former President, Olusegun Obasanjo.

The presidential spokesman disclosed this while featuring on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Sunday.

Onanuga said Tinubu has never ascribed himself to the position of Minister of Petroleum, to which Obasanjo had admitted that he made a mistake at his time.

The presidential aide added that the Petroleum Ministry has two ministers supervised by President Tinubu.

According to Onanuga: “The President has never called himself the Minister of Petroleum; it’s you people in the media. We have two ministers and as far as this President is concerned, we have two ministers of petroleum, and one of them focuses on gas.

"That’s an area that this government discovered in the past that Nigeria neglected and Nigeria is more of a gas country than an oil country; President Tinubu is focusing on gas.

“Recently, Obasanjo said he made a mistake during his time by not focusing on gas and Tinubu is rectifying that by making sure we focus on gas. The president supervises all his ministers; he’s in charge of everything.”
