  • Last week Sunday, my wife woke up very early and began to cook. I was sleeping and was perceiving aroma of food.

I haven't tasted the food nor know what she was preparing but the aroma alone can tell what she was cooking.

I inhaled deeply, and exhaled slowly to the aroma.

The aroma of what I perceived was like fried chicken and egg with other goodies which i can't predict.

    It was like a dream.

The aroma of her cooking woke me up from cloud nine. Everywhere in the house was stew.

The aroma of the food she was cooking over shadow the room fresher of the house.

So I woke up and stylishly walked towards the kitchen door. Immediately she heard my footsteps, she jammed the kitchen door.

I pushed the kitchen door and walked in and stood.

She immediately covered the already fried chicken and stood staring at me.

"Good morning my sweetest queen, my world queen, the only queen that gives me joy when sad." I hailed.

She gazed at me and shook her head the negative way.

I held her round her waist and kissed her neck.

She turned, looked at me, and smiled without uttering a word.

    "Hope you are fine?"

    "I am fine." She replied.

"Ok. Is there anything you would want me to help you with? Like to cut meat, to help you fry you know.. that can thing."

She stared at me and smiled.

"Apart from money O, if it's money don't ask me, and if it's to pound yam don't also ask. Those two things I mentioned zero them from your question." I interrupted.

Immediately she turned and focused on her cooking without a word.

"Cut small meat for me to eat na."

    "Noop."

"please na, is me your husband."

    "NO!!" She raised her voice.

    "But why?"

"Because me myself haven't tasted any yet till we both return from church we will eat as we like."

"And why is your mouth oily if true, true you haven't tasted any?" I asked.

"I am not giving you a cut. Cut for me, cut for me before I know what's up the pot will be empity. I don't want history to repeat itself. So no meat for you till we return from church."

    "Eheeen?"

    "Eheeen." she replied.

"I don't think I will even be going to church today." I said.

She immediately turned and looked at me in surprised.

"Why won't you be going to church? See, we will go to this church together. I see no reason of you staying home." She shouted.

    " I have reasons O."

    "Which are?"

"My clothes are not ironed and I haven't polish my shoe."

    "I have done that already."

"You ironed the one I don't want to wear and polished the shoe I don't like wearing."

"Which do you want to wear to church?" She asked.

    "That my white native."

"I have ironed it already. Infact, I ironed all your clothes last night so get dress before I finish in the kitchen."

"My stomach is paining me. I don't think I will be going today. Just go and pray for us." I said to her, and left the kitchen.

30 minute later she finished everything and came back and met me on bed pressing my phone.

"Like seriously you are not going?" She asked angrily.

"I have told you my stomach is paining me." I replied carelessly.

"Let nothing happen to the food in the kitchen must especially the meat." She warned.

"What do you mean?" I mumbled like someone that wants to take his last breath.

"I have told you already. Infact, don't worry I think I know what to do."

    "What will you do?"

"Only me know what to do." She replied.

I covered myself in blanket and continued shouting my stomach.

She glared at me and walked out of the bedroom without a word.

Immediately I heard the sound of her car, I jumped down from the bed and went straight to the kitchen.

I got to the kitchen but couldn't find the pot nor the meat crumbs in the pot.

I opened the fridge, the cupboard still nothing.

"Where this woman hide this thing?" I whispered to myself.

I searched all the house but couldn't find it. I even checked under the carpet, the sitting room but nothing.

I got tired and gave up searching.

After church service, my wife drove home. When I heard the sound of her car, I went and stood at the door entrance.

She got down from the car and began to sing a worship song. I am sure it was one of the songs they sang in church.

"You cooked and hid it away from your husband so that hunger will kill me abi? Continue." I thundered.

"I know you will look for it. Devil husband like you. See be going to church O." She sparked, and went to the boot of her car and began to bring down the pots.

I stared at her in shocked.

"You took food to church?" I asked surprisedly.

"Yes O. It's better than for me to come back home and meet chicken head and legs." She replied.

"Honey, you took food to church haaa!!" I screamed.

"Or won't you eat again?" She asked.

    I heaved heavily and said to her;

    "Let's go inside and eat."

She looked at me for a moment longer and began to laugh.

I can not come and miss sweet food because food go church.

  • If you ever think of visiting your girlfriend at home, make sure you do background checks on her family. Check her father’s occupation, her mother’s prayer life, and whether her younger brother has a bad mouth. Otherwise, you might end up in a situation like mine where I, a humble Nigerian youth, became a carpenter by force because of love.

It all started on a bright Saturday afternoon. My girlfriend, Chiamaka, had been disturbing me to come and visit her at home. Normally, I preferred neutral grounds like eateries, cinemas, or under a mango tree where nobody could interrogate me. But on this fateful day, she assured me that nobody was at home.

“My parents traveled, and my younger brother went for football practice,” she said sweetly over the phone.

My inner agbaya rejoiced. An empty house? No parental disturbance? No wahala? It was time to operate.

I dressed like a responsible in-law-to-be clean shirt, fresh jeans, and perfume that could summon angels. I even bought small suya on the way to impress her.

By the time I arrived, Chiamaka was already at the door, smiling like a new bride. I entered, sat down, and we started gisting. Before I knew it, one thing led to another. The atmosphere changed. The mood was set. We were about to enter the promised land when suddenly…

    GBOOOOAAAAHHHH!!!

    The front door slammed open.

    My soul left my body.

    WHEN FEAR REWIRES YOUR DESTINY

Standing at the door was a huge, dark-skinned, no-nonsense-looking soldier in full camouflage uniform. His boots alone could kick me into the afterlife. His face? Fear itself would be scared of him.

“Chiamaka!” his deep voice boomed. “Who is this??”

My girlfriend froze. I froze. Time froze. Even the mosquito that was about to bite me froze in mid-air.

“O-o-o-oh Daddy,” she stammered. “You’re back early.”

EARLY? So this was the “traveled” she was talking about? I had been set up by love!

Her father’s eyes scanned me from head to toe, analyzing my life choices. Then his face hardened.

“You,” he barked, pointing at me. “Who are you and what are you doing in my house?”

At that moment, my brain completely abandoned me. My survival instinct kicked in and activated my carpentry skills.

I coughed, stood up, and in my most humble voice, said:

“Sir, good afternoon, sir. I am Henry… THE CARPENTER, sir.”

    “Carpenter?” the man’s eyes narrowed.

“Yes, sir!” I said, nodding like an agama lizard. “I, uh, I came to fix… fix…”

I looked around desperately. My eyes landed on a wooden chair.

“THAT CHAIR, SIR! Chiamaka complained that it was shaking, so I came to repair it.”

I gave Chiamaka a sharp “cooperate-or-we-die” look. She quickly nodded.

“Yes, Daddy! The chair was shaking!”

    Her father eyed us suspiciously.

“Really? So where are your tools?”

    Tools? Oh boy.

I swallowed hard. “Sir, my apprentice is outside with them! Let me just go and”

    “SHUT UP!”

    I shut up.

The man walked over to the chair and sat on it. Then he folded his arms and looked at me.

“Since you’re a carpenter, fix it.”

I swear, at that moment, I saw my obituary poster flash before my eyes.

I bent down beside the chair, pretending to inspect it. Meanwhile, my brain was screaming “JESUS, DELIVER ME!”

I started tapping the chair like a professional. I even nodded and hummed like a master carpenter analyzing deep furniture secrets.

Then I picked up a bottle of Chiamaka’s perfume from the table and used it to spray the chair joints like I was applying wood polish.

Chiamaka’s father frowned. “What are you doing?”

I quickly wiped the chair’s leg with my hand. “Just lubricating the surface, sir!”

The man stared at me for a long time. Then, to my horror, he smiled.

“Young man, you are very hardworking,” he said. “I like that. Come to the backyard, I have more furniture that needs fixing.”

    WHAT HAVE I DONE?!

I had no choice but to follow him outside. My girlfriend? She had disappeared into the kitchen to “look for something.” Useless girl!

For the next one hour, I was in the backyard sweating like a Christmas goat. This man made me carry wood, hammer nails, and even repaint an old table. I was suffering for love!

At some point, he patted my shoulder and said, “My daughter needs a responsible man like you. In fact, I will introduce you to my soldier friends. They need carpentry work too.”

    GOD FORBID!

By the time he finally dismissed me, my clean clothes were covered in sawdust, sweat, and regret. Chiamaka sneaked outside and whispered, “Baby, sorry.”

I gave her a “You will hear from me” look and ran for my life before the man asked me to build him a whole house.

Since that day, whenever I hear “carpenter,” I start sweating. Because love almost turned me into a laborer.
