  • Nigerian singer Tems saw off the likes of Yemi Alade, Burna Boy and Wizkid to take home the Best African Music Performance Grammy for her hit Love Me Jeje.

In an emotional acceptance speech on Sunday evening, she said her "heart was beating so fast".

It is only the second year since the category's introduction, a move that was widely welcomed as a recognition of the impact of African artists on the global music scene.

However, there was some controversy this year as US R&B star Chris Brown was one of the nominees - for his song Sensational, which incorporates Afrobeats elements and features guest vocals from Nigerian artists Davido and Lojay.

Tems was out of breath as she took to the stage after her name was read out at the awards ceremony in Los Angeles.

"I do work out but it's not showing up right now," she joked as she patted her heart to the amusement of the audience.

The 29-year-old also praised her mother.

“Wow, dear God thank you so much for putting me on this stage and bringing this team, and tomorrow is my mum’s birthday and this is her first Grammys.

“I just want to thank you mum," she said gesturing towards her, "because she has done a lot for me and my brother.”

Love Me Jeje, which samples a line from Seyi Sodimu's 1997 Nigerian classic of the same name, has racked up 125 million listens on Spotify and 21 million views on YouTube.

With Sunday's prize, Tems has become the first Nigerian to have two Grammys to her name after winning the Best Melodic Rap Performance in 2023 for featuring on Future's hit Wait For U.

  • I remember watching the Grammys and looking at the performances and crying to my mom, saying how much I wanted to be there.

  • Tiwa Savage has never been nominated or even considered for the Grammys

But can you compare her to Ayra Starr ? NO

She has never filled the 02 Arena but can you compare her to Asake ? No .

You see Awards ? They are good but they’ll never be used as a means to know an artist’s worth .

Tiwa made it when there was no social media and today she is still making it . She has hits and classics that will live on forever . She is a Queen and few are yet to reach her level . Forget about the Grammys .

    Today we celebrate her .

  • I feel we should create our own Grammy because Essence by Wizkid should have won Best Global Music Performance” Nicki Minaj

American female rapper Nicki Minaj revealed that Africans should create their own Grammy. According to her, Wizkid’s “Essence” featuring Tems should've won Best Global Music Performance at the Grammys.

She believes that the Grammys have always snubbed great records from Africa and once you are not an American they do not care how many quality projects or how much energy you put into your work.

Essence” still remains one of the biggest African records and one of the biggest chart-topping songs ever in the history of African Music.

  • "Jay-Z has 24 Grammys, his wife Beyoncé has 32, and even their kids have Grammys. But 2Pac had no Grammys, which tells you everything about the Grammys."~ 50 cent

50 cent :"Jay-Z's career was boosted because he was married to Beyoncé. His association with her made his career different. It was obvioús when he started receiving his 16th and 17th Grammy Awards, because he was with Beyoncé. Now he has about 24 Grammy Awards. Even their kids have Grammy Awards, which is funny cuz they don't sing or rap. It's now cråzy because it seems like they're gifting themselves Grammys, while others who deserve it haven't received one yet. This has made the system appear corrúpt. For example, 2Pac was never awarded a Grammy, but Jay-Z has 24. That's sh!t cråzy."

The fact his daughter has a Grammy tells you everything about the Gråmmys

Jay Z daughter, Blue Ivy , having a Grammy is a slåp in the face to artists with talent that have put in the work. 50 gives no fks. Always speaking truth.
