  • As a 23-year-old born and raised in Middelburg, Mpumalanga, my love for farming was nurtured from a young age. Growing up on a farm, I drew inspiration from my grandmother's tireless dedication to farming. Her unwavering commitment instilled in me a profound respect for the land and a burning desire to one day own my own farm.

My childhood vision was clear: to cultivate my own land, raise thriving livestock, and build a sustainable agricultural business. I dreamed of waking up each morning to the sound of birds chirping and the sun rising over my farm. Now, I'm turning that vision into reality.

Last October, Ntokozo Masinga took the bold step of starting her own pig farm. It was a dream come true! She is also actively working towards acquiring land, driven by a strong passion for farming.

My journey has taught me valuable lessons such as perseverance and resilience in overcoming obstacles.

If you want to start pig farming but lack information, get a piggery manual with all the steps to take and information on how to raise pigs. The guidebook is both practical and user-friendly. Available in both hardcopy (R350) or PDF (R280). WhatsApp (078) 3122-675 to order the guidebook.

To fellow aspiring farmers, I urge you to not let fear hold you back. Take the leap, work tirelessly, and believe in yourself. Your dreams are within reach.

  • How to construct a poultry house:

Commercial chicken farming requires a high-level of expertise, understanding and commitment to be successful.

Whilst it’s important to emphasize the need for excellent flock management at all times, something that comes with experience and aptitude, adopting the correct housing techniques and equipment will set a firm foundation for success of your poultry venture.

The following is a guiding checklist for poultry house construction:

"A poultry house should provide the birds with a comfortable environment and protect them from the extremities of the prevailing weather (rain, wind and sunshine).

"It should have adequate space for the flock to be kept in the house. The ideal stocking density is:

    1. Layers: one square metre for 6 birds.

    2. Broilers: One square metre for 11 birds.

"It should be open-sided to allow natural ventilation with an east-west orientation to minimise the amount of sunlight entering the house directly. Its not good for sun rays to strike directly into the poultry house.

"It should be rectangular in shape and have a wall not higher than three feet on the longer side. The widith should be at least 7-9 metres, but for the length you are only limited by your land. Avoid building poultry houses in a square form.

"The wall can be made from stones, iron sheets, timber, silver boards or bricks

"The rest of the side of the wall should have a chicken wire mesh. The wire mesh on the sides of the house should be of a small gauge to prevent entry of wild birds, dogs and rodents. This normal chicken mesh is not long lasting.....within a few months it rusts and gets off the house. its better to use a plastic quoted mesh.

"The roof of the house should have a reflecting surface and pitched with overlaps to ensure that the house is comfortable and well ventilated. There should be enough gap between the birds and the roof to avoid heat stress. The pin of the house should be 8 metres from the ground, and the sides should be 5 metres.

"Concrete floors are the best finishing as they are easier to clean and disinfect. Do not put "nil" after putting concrete on the floor.

"There should be a foot-bath at the entrance of the house for those entering the poultry house to disinfect their foot wear. You know farm boys have a tendency of jumping the foot bath, but if it is wide enough they cannot jump it.

"To reduce the risk of rodents gaining entrance into the poultry house, clear all the vegetation in a radius of 3-5 metres around the pen.

"The feed store should also be separate from the house to reduce risk of attracting rodents.

"It should be constructed in isolated areas to minimise the risk of contamination.

"your poultry house plan must have a tank raised inside the poultry house. Exposing water to sunshine in bad, as it gets warm and birds may reject it, or may facilitate heat stress during the dry seasons.

"The house should be fenced to exclude stray animals and visitors.

"The doors should always be locked.

"On poultry farms, an all-in all-out system is the best management practice as it prevents the build up of disease causing organisms and disease outbreaks. Its always good to have one age group in each house, but not putting different ages in one house!

In case where farmers want to keep flocks of different ages, then each flock must be housed in its own.

    Ventilation:

Ventilation is the circulation of fresh air through the flock house and exhaustion of stale air out of the flock units and its achieved by air passing from one side of the house and exhausting through the opposite side.

Ventilation of poultry houses serves several functions including:

    1.Removing excess heat and moisture.

2.Providing oxygen while removing harmful gases.

3.Reducing dust hence improving the air quality.

You must always allow optimal ventilation to avoid chicks getting suffocated.

  • The causes of high failure rate in poultry business:

    1) Lack of Technical knowledge.

It is regrettable that many people and organizations have ventured into poultry farming without technical knowledge. Knowledge of poultry farming techniques are required before anyone can operate the business profitably.

    2) Management Problem.

An incompetent management may not be able to operate a profitable poultry farm. The managers of the farm must know what they are employed to do and posses the ability to do it.

Some poultry managers fail to recognise the peculiarity of poultry farming in their management style, thereby preparing good ground for losses in the venture. Many managers do not recognize the need for timely planning and control in running the farm.

    3) Diseased Breeds.

Some fertilized eggs meant to be hatched in the incubator could be infected with disease from the parent stock. This means that before the eggs were hatched they had been diseased. If the disease are not detected and treated on time, the affected birds may die sooner or later.

    4) Hygiene Deficiency.

There is a minimum hygiene condition that must exist in any poultry farm if the birds are to remain healthy and produce maximally for profit. The poultry farm must be kept clean always; the droppings should be cleared on time before they constitute an agent of disease.

    5) Poor feeding condition and wastage of feed.

The birds need to be fed well in the pens in order to produce maximum meat and eggs (either of which may be the purpose for running the farm).

The birds are fed with varying quantities of feed at different stages and with the appropriate feed. The various feeds are chicks mash, grower mash and layer mash, which must be sufficiently rich to give the birds the required nutrients to grow healthy and produce optimally.

    6) Security.

A poultry farm must be established in a secured place to ward off enemies of birds, such as rats, soldier ants, snakes, wild birds, etc. Most of these enemies are agents of disease that could lead to an epidemic on the farm, and they kill the birds directly as well.

There must be strict check on the farm workers who may be stealing the fowls and the eggs. Also, visitors may constitute a problem to the farm if they are not properly checked.

    7) Housing.

Birds need minimum space and convenient place to grow well and produce maximally meat and eggs. Birds are spaced on the farm according to their ages; while the chicks need little space, growers and mature birds need more space and ventilation to perform well.

The services of a consultant may be needed to determine the appropriate spacing for the birds without which they may suffocate to death, which will be a big loss to the business.

Inability to prevent, detect and control disease.

It is often said that prevention is better than cure, as far as disease are concerned and this is a true statement and relevant one to poultry farming.

A poultry farmer should know how to prevent poultry disease, as well as how to cure them. If he or she does know anything about preventive measures, the services of consultants in the field should be engaged for good result.

    9) Marketing.

A marketing plan is absolutely necessary for successful commercial poultry farming, as any farmer ignorant of his or her marketing needs is bound to run into serious losses and eventual failure.

It will be ridiculous to start poultry production without knowing when, where, how and to whom to sell the fowls, eggs, feathers and droppings as they are produced. We cannot talk of profit if the meat and eggs have no ready market.

Eggs have a very short shelf life and if they are not sold quickly, they will go bad, and no one is interested in buying bad eggs. Also, birds not sold at the appropriate time will be fed at an extra cost that may make the business unprofitable.

Therefore, adequate marketing strategies are needed to sell all the poultry products at the appropriate time and prices.

    10) Ignoring the role of livestock consultants.

There are always practicing experts in every profession or occupation who function as consultants. They are there to proffer solutions to problems that exist in such professions at a minimum cost.

Where a livestock farmer doesn’t have adequate technical and managerial experience, he or she can consult experts for necessary advice to bridge the gap.

Even where the farmer thinks he or she has all it takes to run a farm successfully, there may be need to seek the services of experts in the field, as it is usually said that two heads are better than one.

  • WORDS FROM A FATHER TO A SON ABOUT MARRIAGE.....

    1. My son, if you keep spending on a woman and she never asked you if you’re
saving or investing, and she keeps enjoying the attention, don’t marry her.

    2. My son, a woman could be a good wife to you, some could be a good mother to
your children but if you’ve found a woman like a mother to you, your children and
your family, please don’t let her go.

    3. My son, don’t confine the position of your wife to the kitchen, where did you get
that from? Even in our days, we had farm-lands where they worked every
morning . . . that was our office.

    4. My son, if I tell you that you’re the head of the house, don’t look at your pocket;
look if you will see a smile on your wife’s face.

    5. My son, if you want to have a long life, let your wife be in-charge of your salary,
it will be difficult for her to spend it when she’s aware of the home needs and bills
to pay but if it’s in your care, she will keep you asking even when all has been
    spent.

    6. My son, don’t ever beat your woman, the pain in her body is nothing to be
compared to the wound on her heart and that means you may be in trouble living
    with a wounded woman.

    7. My son, now that you’re married, if you live a bachelor kind of life with your
wife, you will soon be single again.

    8. My son, in our days, we had many wives and many children because of our
large farm-lands and many harvests, there are hardly any land for farming anymore, so embrace your woman closely.

    9. My son, under the cocoa tree that I did meet your mother could be your
eateries and restaurants of nowadays, but remember, the closet thing we did there
    was to embrace each other.

    10. My son, don’t be carried away when you start making more money, instead of
spending on those tiny legs that never knew how hard you worked to get it, spend
it on that woman that stood by you all along.

    11. My son, when I threw little stones or whistled at the window of your mother
father’s house, to call her out, it was not for sex, it was because I missed her so
    much.

    12. My son, remember, when you say your wife has changed, there could be
    something you’ve stopped doing too.

    13. My son, your mother, Asake rode the bicycle with me before I bought that
tortoise car outside there, any woman that won’t endure with you in your little
beginning should not enjoy your riches.

    14. My son, don’t compare your wife to any woman, there are ways she’s enduring
you too and has she ever compared you to any man?

    15. My son, there is this thing you people call feminism, well, if a woman claim to
have equal right with you in the house, divide all the bills into two equal parts, take
one part and ask her to start paying the other part.

    16. My son, I met your mother a virgin and I took more yams to her father, if you
don’t meet your wife a virgin, don’t blame her, what I didn’t tell you is that our
    women had prestige.

    17. My son, I didn’t send your sisters to school because I was foolish like many to
think a female child won’t extend my family name, please don’t make that mistake,
the kind of female achievers I see nowadays has made the male-gender an ordinary
    tag.

    18. My son, your mother have once locked up the cloth I was wearing and almost
tore it because she was angry, I did not raise my hand to beat her because of a day
like this, so that I can be proud to tell you that I never for once beat your mother.

    19. My son, in our days, our women had more of natural beauty, though I
wouldn’t lie to you, some had minor painting of their appellation mostly on their
arms, the ones you people now call tattoo, but don’t forget that they didn’t expose
any part of their body like your women of nowadays.

    20. My son, your mother and I are not interested in what happens in your
marriage, try to handle issues without always coming to us.

    21. My son, remember I bought your mother’s first sewing machine for her, help
your wife achieve her dreams just as you’re pursuing yours.

    22. My son, don’t stop taking care of me and your mother, it’s a secret of growing
old and having children to take care of you too.

    23. My son, pray with your family, there is a tomorrow you don’t know, talk to
    God that knows everything, everyday.

  • How to Construct a Poultry House

Commercial chicken farming demands expertise, understanding, and unwavering commitment for success. Getting your poultry housing right is crucial for laying a solid foundation for your venture. Here's a handy checklist to guide you through poultry house construction:

Provide Comfort: Ensure your poultry house offers a comfortable environment shielding birds from weather extremities like rain, wind, and direct sunlight.

Spaciousness: Allocate adequate space based on stocking density:

    Layers: 1m² for 6 birds
    Broilers: 1m² for 11 birds

Ventilation: Opt for an open-sided house with east-west orientation to allow natural airflow. Avoid direct sunlight exposure.

Structure: Construct a rectangular-shaped house with a wall not exceeding three feet in height on the longer side. Opt for materials like stones, iron sheets, or bricks for durability.

Mesh Matters: Use a small gauge chicken wire mesh to prevent entry of wild birds, dogs, and rodents. Consider a plastic-coated mesh for longevity.

Roofing: Choose a reflective surface for the roof and ensure proper pitch for ventilation. Maintain adequate gap between birds and roof to prevent heat stress.

Flooring: floors should be ideal for easy cleaning and disinfection.

Hygiene Measures: Install a foot-bath at the entrance and clear vegetation around the pen to deter rodents. Keep the feed store separate to minimize rodent attraction.

Isolation: Construct the house in isolated areas to minimize contamination risks.

Ventilation Management: Optimal ventilation is crucial for heat and moisture regulation, oxygen supply, and air quality improvement. Open curtains for airflow during warm weather and close them for warmth during cold spells.

Safety: Fence the area and keep doors locked to prevent entry of stray animals and visitors.

Here's a handy checklist to guide you through poultry house construction: 🌟 Provide Comfort: Ensure your poultry house offers a comfortable environment shielding birds from weather extremities like rain, wind, and direct sunlight. 🌟 Spaciousness: Allocate adequate space based on stocking density: Layers: 1m² for 6 birds Broilers: 1m² for 11 birds 🌟 Ventilation: Opt for an open-sided house with east-west orientation to allow natural airflow. Avoid direct sunlight exposure. 🌟 Structure: Construct a rectangular-shaped house with a wall not exceeding three feet in height on the longer side. Opt for materials like stones, iron sheets, or bricks for durability. 🌟 Mesh Matters: Use a small gauge chicken wire mesh to prevent entry of wild birds, dogs, and rodents. Consider a plastic-coated mesh for longevity. 🌟 Roofing: Choose a reflective surface for the roof and ensure proper pitch for ventilation. Maintain adequate gap between birds and roof to prevent heat stress. 🌟 Flooring: floors should be ideal for easy cleaning and disinfection. 🌟 Hygiene Measures: Install a foot-bath at the entrance and clear vegetation around the pen to deter rodents. Keep the feed store separate to minimize rodent attraction. 🌟 Isolation: Construct the house in isolated areas to minimize contamination risks. 🌟 Ventilation Management: Optimal ventilation is crucial for heat and moisture regulation, oxygen supply, and air quality improvement. Open curtains for airflow during warm weather and close them for warmth during cold spells. 🌟 Safety: Fence the area and keep doors locked to prevent entry of stray animals and visitors.
