  • The Donkey and The Cotton:

    There once lived a salt merchant. He had a monkey for his assistance. Every morning, he would load a sack of salt on the donkey and go to the nearby town to sell it. On the way, they had to walk across a pond.

    One day, while crossing the pond, the donkey thought,"Ooh! This load is so heavy that I become exhausted very soon. I wish I could get some of this load taken off my back." Just then the donkey tripped and fell into the water.

    Fortunately, the donkey was not hurt. But the sack of salt on the donkey’s back fell into the water. Both the donkey and the salt became wet. Some of the salt in the sack got dissolved, making the load on the donkey lighter. The donkey felt very happy about the reduction in the weight of the sack of salt on its back. The merchant did his best to help the donkey to get up and they carried on their journey.

    From that day, it became a regular practice for the donkey to slip and fall in the pond whenever they crossed the pond to the market. This would dissolve some salt in the sack thus reducing the weight and relieving the donkey of some load. The merchant was not aware of the donkey’s cunningness. This continued for a few days.

    One day, the merchant noticed the donkey deliberately slipping and landing with the sack into the water. “Oh! So this is the way I am losing my salt everyday" he thought. He decided to teach the donkey a lesson.

    Next morning, instead of loading a sack of salt, the merchant loaded a sack of cotton on the donkey’s back. As usual they had decided to reach the market by crossing the same pond. While crossing the same pond, the donkey, as usual, slipped and fell into the pond, hoping that after some time the weight of the sack would go reduced. As usual, both the donkey and the cotton would become wet. But this time, when he got up, the load on his back seemed heavier. “Ooh! The Load seems to have gotten heavier," thought the donkey. The donkey was astonished at what had taken place against the usual result.

    The merchant looked at the donkey and said, “Dear friend, I saw you fall into the water of the pond deliberately every day with the malicious intention of reducing the weight of the salt. So, I loaded a sack of cotton today. Cotton when wet gets more weight and becomes heavier. Now you will have to carry it to the town." The poor donkey had learnt his lesson.

    OPEN HEAVENS

    OPEN HEAVENS DAILY DEVOTIONAL

    DATE: TUESDAY JANUARY 21ST 2025

    TOPIC: THE POWER OF TESTIMONIES

    MEMORISE:
    “That I may publish with the voice of thanksgiving, and tell of all thy wondrous works.” - (Psalm 26:7)

    READ: PSALM 145:1-12 (KJV)

    1 I will extol thee, my God, O king; and I will bless thy name for ever and ever.

    2 Every day will I bless thee; and I will praise thy name for ever and ever.

    3 Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised; and his greatness is unsearchable.

    4 One generation shall praise thy works to another, and shall declare thy mighty acts.

    5 I will speak of the glorious honour of thy majesty, and of thy wondrous works.

    6 And men shall speak of the might of thy terrible acts: and I will declare thy greatness.

    7 They shall abundantly utter the memory of thy great goodness, and shall sing of thy righteousness.

    8 The LORD is gracious, and full of compassion; slow to anger, and of great mercy.

    9 The LORD is good to all: and his tender mercies are over all his works.

    10 All thy works shall praise thee, O LORD; and thy saints shall bless thee.

    11 They shall speak of the glory of thy kingdom, and talk of thy power;

    12 To make known to the sons of men his mighty acts, and the glorious majesty of his kingdom.

    MESSAGE:
    Romans 10:17 says that faith comes by hearing God's word. Revelation 12:11 also tells us that testimonies are powerful weapons that can defeat the devil. This is why I keep sharing testimonies. I have discovered that many people don't often remember the Bible passages I quote during my sermons, but they remember the testimonies. When you look back at the things the Lord has done, you become confident that you can overcome any obstruction that may come your way.

    In (1 Samuel 17:1-51), when David confronted Goliath, his testimonies gave him the assurance that he would win. He said, "The God who delivered me from the lion and the bear will deal with Goliath." God has kept you alive until now, and He will keep you unto the end, in Jesus' name.

    Bartimaeus, in Mark 10:46-52, was a blind man who was begging by the roadside. He heard that Jesus was passing by and began to cry for help. How did he know that Jesus can open blind eyes? I'm sure it was because he had heard testimonies of miracles that Jesus had performed. So, when he heard that the same Jesus was passing by, he knew that his miracle had come.

    Several years ago, I shared a testimony about how my wife delivered a baby naturally after she had delivered three of our children through Caesarean Sections. The doctor had told us, "No more babies," and we agreed. Thereafter, we became born again, and one day, I read the Bible passage that says, "...with God nothing shall be impossible," and I believed it. My wife and I agreed that we would have another child, and this time, we would not involve any doctor. The baby was born safely by God's grace. I shared the testimony for the first time in Kaduna, a state in Northern Nigeria, as I preached a message titled, '10 steps to your miracle' (The original sermon note I used can be accessed in the Open Heavens International Centre). A woman who attended the programme wrote all the steps in her notebook. She had undergone two Caesarean Sections and was pregnant with her third baby. When she was about to give birth, she took the notebook and began to follow the steps. While she was still acting on the steps, the baby came.

    Beloved, Jesus is the same yesterday, today, and forever (Hebrews 13:8). If you have heard someone share a testimony concerning whatever situation you are going through, have faith that your miracle will also come.

    ACTION POINT:
    List at least five things God has done for you and share your testimonies with those around you.

    BIBLE IN ONE YEAR: EXODUS 17-20

    AUTHOR PASTOR E A ADEBOYE

    HYMNAL: 26 - THERE SHALL BE SHOWERS OF BLESSING

    1 There shall be showers of blessing:
    This is the promise of love;
    There shall be seasons refreshing,
    Sent from the Savior above.
    Refrain:
    Showers of blessing,
    Showers of blessing we need:
    Mercy-drops round us are falling,
    But for the showers we plead.

    2 There shall be showers of blessing,
    Precious reviving again;
    Over the hills and the valleys,
    Sound of abundance of rain. [Refrain]

    3 There shall be showers of blessing:
    Send them upon us, O Lord;
    Grant to us now a refreshing,
    Come and now honor Thy Word. [Refrain]

    4 There shall be showers of blessing:
    Oh, that today they might fall,
    Now as to God we're confessing,
    Now as on Jesus we call! [Refrain]

  • MY WIFE AND I WENT TO AN ORPHANAGE TO ADOPT A CHILD AND FOUND A GIRL WHO WAS A CARBON COPY OF MY DAUGHTER
    My wife and I have been dreaming about adding another child to our family. Unfortunately, my wife can't have children, so it's just the three of us—her, me, and my amazing five-year-old daughter from my previous marriage, whom we both adore.
    After months of conversations and soul-searching, we decided to take the leap and adopt.
    That day, we arrived at the children's shelter and spent about an hour in an interview with the director. Then she took us to the playroom where the kids were.
    We spent time playing and talking with many of them. Honestly, they were all incredible. If we could, we would've opened our home to every single one of them. But we agreed we wanted to adopt a child we felt an undeniable connection with.
    While we were helping a group of kids with a puzzle, I suddenly felt a small tap on my back. I turned around, and a little girl said, "ARE YOU MY NEW DAD? I JUST FEEL LIKE YOU ARE."
    I FROZE. My wife looked like she might faint. The girl standing in front of me was THE SPITTING IMAGE OF MY DAUGHTER, who was at home with her nanny.
    She held out her tiny hand, and that's when I saw it—A BIRTHMARK IDENTICAL TO MY DAUGHTER'S.
    "WHAT’S YOUR NAME?" I managed to ask, my voice barely a whisper.
