• A TALE OF SECOND CHANCES (p.3)

Diana came in last, young and beautiful as a rose. She was an epitome of beauty. Many believed Ted married her for that reason, because she was like a priceless treasure that many wished to possess. She was an aspiring actress before their marriage and rose to stardom months after. She’d agreed to marry him for the purpose of fame and had engaged in countless amorous relationships while Ted traveled the world building his empire.

A few months to his thirty-fifth birthday, a letter reached MaryAnn, who now lived in a mansion in the city and was immensely successful, having opened many branches of Annie’s Fruity Mix all around the country. It was a letter from Ted. It read thus:

    "Dearest Red Rose,

I hope you’re doing well! I am happy to see how far you’ve come since I last saw you. I’m sorry things had to be this way. I have many regrets even now. I hope Roselyne doesn’t hate me. I hope you let her get the gifts I send?

I fear I may not see my thirty-fifth birthday. I have been diagnosed with a heart disease and I am deteriorating rapidly. The doctors say I have a short time to live.

I’d very much love to see you again. Enclosed herein is the hospital where I am. Please come, and bring Roselyne along.

    Your loving husband,
    Teddy ❤”

All the anger she’d felt faded at once, and she called her personal assistant to clear her schedule for the next day so she could visit her husband. Things didn’t go as planned because the lady Estella would not let them come into Ted’s chambers. An argument ensued between the two, and MaryAnn stood her ground until Ted’s PA walked up to her and pressed a note into her palm, extricating her from the argument.

    ... To be continued.

  • A TALE OF SECOND CHANCES

Once upon a time there lived a wealthy man named Ted. He had countless properties scattered across the globe and acres upon acres of fertile land for orchards, ranches, and timber farms. His wealth and fame drew women to him from far and wide. And although his marital plans had been to settle with one woman, he ended up with three wives by the time he reached his thirty-fifth year.

MaryAnn was the first, the wife of his youth, his first love. They’d been together when the world knew little of his existence. She’d stood by his side when he was nothing but a struggling, laboring farmer in a lord’s farm that offered employment to the villagers. She’d agreed to marry him in his low state despite her parents’ and friends’ warnings. Moving into their little house had been one of her happiest moments, and the honeymoon spent along the little river behind their humble home was an experience she cherished forever.

She’d been pregnant with their first child when a letter had come from the village attorney summoning Ted to the magistrate’s office. It was a turn of events that would change the course of their lives forever. The summons had been on account of a sick lord who owned a gigantic estate in their village, testifying that Ted was his son whom he’d lost and thought dead since childhood. A DNA test had been carried out, and the claim had proven true. Lord Engred, as MaryAnn came to know him, bequeathed his entire estate to Ted upon his death and absorbed him into the life of the bourgeoisie...
