1️⃣ Masses of displaced *Palestinians have begun streaming towards the north of the war-battered Gaza Strip* after Israel and Hamas said they had *reached a deal for the release of another six hostages.*

The breakthrough *preserves a fragile ceasefire and paves the way for more hostage-prisoner swaps* under an agreement aimed at ending the more than 15-month conflict, which has devastated Gaza and displaced nearly all its residents.

*Israel had been preventing Palestinians from returning to their homes in northern Gaza*, accusing Hamas of violating the terms of the truce by not releasing a civilian woman hostage.

But Prime Minister *Benjamin Netanyahu's office said late Sunday they would be allowed to pass* after the new deal was reached for the release of three hostages on Thursday, as well as another three on Saturday.

*Crowds began making their way north along a coastal road on Monday morning*, carrying what belongings they could, AFPTV images showed.

2️⃣ The *besieged Congolese city of Goma has been rocked by heavy artillery fire* as France warned the regional capital was *on the brink of falling to militia fighters* and Rwandan troops.

The *M23 armed group and Rwandan soldiers entered Goma's centre* on Sunday night after *weeks of advancing on the main city* in DR Congo's mineral-rich North Kivu province.

*French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot said the Rwanda-backed offensive _"must stop"_*, expressing his country's solidarity with the Democratic Republic of Congo _"as Goma prepares to fall"_.

With *international pressure mounting for an end to the battle for Goma,* Kenya said on Sunday that Congolese President Felix Tshisekedi and Rwandan President Paul Kagame had agreed to attend a summit in the next two days.

*M23 fighters and 3,000 to 4,000 Rwandan soldiers had been laying siege to Goma* for several days, according to the United Nations and security sources.

Enugu police arrest man for cutting wife’s wrist with cutlass over suspicion she is cheating on him

The Enugu State Police Command, through its operatives attached to Okpuje Division, on January 26, 2025, have arrested one Sunday Echege, a 33-year-old male resident of Ibagwa-Agu Farm Settlement in Ibagwa-Ani community, Nsukka LGA, for severing the left wrist of his wife, Chinonso Echege. The arrest was made possible with the assistance of law-abiding members of the community, and the machete used in committing the crime was recovered from the suspect.

Preliminary investigations reveal that the suspect, who has confessed to the crime, claimed he acted out of suspicion that his wife was involved in extramarital affairs.

Confirming the arrest, the spokesperson of the command, SP Daniel Ndukwe, says the suspect will be arraigned in court upon the conclusion of investigations.

Ndukwe added that the state Commissioner of Police, CP Kanayo Uzuegbu, has directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to ensure a thorough and timely investigation, followed by the prosecution of the suspect. He further urged couples to resolve their differences through love, understanding, and legal means, rather than resorting to violent criminal acts.
