Rikki-Tikki-Tavi is a mongoose, an animal similar to a weasel and a cat, and the protagonist of this short story. After a flood separated Rikki-Tikki from his mother and father, he was found and nursed back to health by a colonial family who inhabits the bungalow. When Rikki-Tikki felt wholey himself again, he immediately began to bond with the family, especially their young son, Teddy. He felt it was his duty to protect the family from the dangers lurking just outside of their bungalow in their garden. Rikki-Tikki is very curious and is careful never to let down his guard, not even when curled up and sleeping next to the young boy in his bed. When forced to battle two cobras to keep the family safe, Rikki-Tikki proves to be a thoughtful and confident mongoose who understands the value of a well-crafted plan.
