Trilecha Cake (or Tres Leches Cake) is a popular Latin American dessert that consists of a sponge cake soaked in three types of milk: evaporated milk, condensed milk, and heavy cream. It’s incredibly moist, sweet, and often topped with whipped cream and fresh fruit. Here’s how to make it:
Trilecha Cake Recipe
Ingredients:
For the Cake:
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 ½ tsp baking powder
½ tsp salt
5 large eggs (separated)
1 cup granulated sugar (divided)
1 tsp vanilla extract
⅓ cup whole milk
For the Milk Mixture:
1 can (12 oz) evaporated milk
1 can (14 oz) sweetened condensed milk
1 cup heavy cream
For the Topping:
1 cup heavy whipping cream
3 tbsp powdered sugar (adjust to taste)
1 tsp vanilla extract
Fresh fruit (like berries, mango, or kiwi, for garnish)
Instructions:
1. Bake the Cake:
Preheat the Oven:
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9x13-inch baking dish.
Mix Dry Ingredients:
In a bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
Beat Egg Yolks:
In a large mixing bowl, beat the egg yolks and ¾ cup of granulated sugar until pale and creamy. Stir in the vanilla extract and whole milk.
Combine Dry and Wet:
Gradually add the dry ingredients to the egg yolk mixture, mixing until just combined.
Beat Egg Whites:
In a separate bowl, beat the egg whites until soft peaks form. Gradually add the remaining ¼ cup of sugar and continue to beat until stiff peaks form.
Fold Egg Whites:
Gently fold the beaten egg whites into the cake batter until no streaks remain.
Bake:
Pour the batter into the prepared baking dish and bake for about 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Allow to cool in the pan for about 10 minutes.
Poke Holes:
Once cooled, poke holes all over the cake with a fork or skewer.
2. Prepare the Milk Mixture:
Combine Milks:
In a bowl, whisk together the evaporated milk, sweetened condensed milk, and heavy cream until well combined.
Soak the Cake:
Slowly pour the milk mixture over the cooled cake, ensuring it seeps into the holes. Let the cake absorb the milk mixture for at least 1-2 hours in the refrigerator (or overnight for best results).
3. Whip the Topping:
Whip Cream:
In a mixing bowl, beat the heavy whipping cream, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract until stiff peaks form.
4. Assemble and Serve:
Top the Cake:
Once the cake has soaked up the milk mixture, spread the whipped cream on top.
Garnish:
Add fresh fruit on top for decoration.
Slice and Serve:
Cut into squares and serve chilled. Enjoy your delicious Trilecha Cake!
Tips:
Flavor Additions: You can add a splash of rum or vanilla extract to the milk mixture for extra flavor.
Serving Suggestions: Serve with a sprinkle of cinnamon or a drizzle of chocolate syrup for added flavor.
