  • Goat and Sheep Kidding/Lambing: A Comprehensive Guide to Safe Delivery

Goat and sheep farmers must be well-prepared for the kidding and lambing process to ensure a smooth and successful delivery. Understanding the signs of labor, proper birthing positions, and intervention techniques can make a significant difference in reducing mortality rates and ensuring the health of both the mother and offspring.

This guide provides essential information on the kidding/lambing process, signs of labor, normal and abnormal birth positions, and best practices for assisting difficult births.

    Understanding the Kidding/Lambing Process

Kidding or lambing occurs 146-156 days after breeding for goats and sheep. It is crucial to prepare a clean and secure birthing environment for the doe or ewe, ideally one week before the expected due date. While pasture kidding is common in Zambia during good weather, individual pens are recommended for better monitoring and biosecurity.

    Signs of Kidding/Lambing

Recognizing early signs of labor can help farmers provide timely assistance when needed. Common indicators include:

Restlessness – The doe/ewe may paw at the bedding frequently.

Hollow appearance – A noticeable hollow on either side of the tail.

Isolation – In a herd, the mother may separate herself from the rest.

Affectionate behavior – Increased signs of affection towards the farmer or other animals.

Vaginal discharge – A clear or slightly colored discharge is a strong sign that birth is imminent.

    Normal Birthing Positions

A normal birth occurs when the kid or lamb presents with:

The nose diving between the front legs.

Both hind legs together with the dew claws facing up.

The kid/lamb is positioned right side up, face down.

Most births progress without complications. However, a small percentage of cases may require assistance, especially for young or first-time mothers.

  • Do you sometimes look back at the things you were doing before you became a Virtual Assistant and then realize that all of them are connecting?

Well that was how I felt anytime I remember my journey as a baker, managing time, attending to customers, organizing of the shops documents and recording sales.

When I became a Virtual Assistant I noticed that all the things I was doing as a baker aligned and that I was not really wasting my time studying the virtual Assistant course cause I had a background knowledge on the skills being taught.

As a virtual Assistant I realized that
Time management was a very important skill that every virtual Assistant must have especially when you're dealing with two different time zones
Attending to customers which is related to customer service is one crucial thing in every Industry cause it's the way you relate to every customer that determine if they'll come back to your organization or not
As a virtual Assistant you must be organized cause no company or organization will want to hire a disorganized person
Recording of sales which is related to data entry and bookkeeping. This is also a very important skill every virtual Assistant must have cause companies are looking for people that can be accountable and also pay attention to details.

All these things that I was doing as a baker of which I thought were just some normal stuffs that I was doing actually shaped me and made me the Virtual Assistant that I am today.

  • As part of my commitment to encouraging a conducive learning environment and quality education of our people, I commissioned and handed over an academic block, which I built, to Maurid College of Nursing Science, Mbiaso, Nsit Ibom local government area, during its maiden matriculation ceremony of 300 students, where I served as chairman on the occasion, yesterday.

I also promised to install solar-powered lightings around the institution's premises to ensure security of the students and property at night.

I used the opportunity to charge the prospective healthcare professionals to focus on their studies, so that upon graduation, they will fill the manpower gap created in the health sector by migration of other professionals for greener pastures.

Part of my address to them reads; "Your journey to becoming healthcare professionals is a call to service and humanity. This is further buttressed in the popular maxim that "health is wealth." This is in line with Harvey S. Firestone's philosophy that "the growth and development of people is the highest calling of leadership."

"This quote has consistently guided my life and activities both in private and public service. It is the propelling force behind my mega empowerment, scholarship, bursary, skill acquisition, facilitation of jobs in strategic Federal Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) and foreign trainings to Akwa Ibom people."

"Also, the newly completed edifice, which shall be commissioned and donated to the institution today, is my modest effort to encourage this massive investment and, most especially, to ensure you get a conducive learning environment."

"These efforts are aimed at raising Akwa Ibom men and women who are stable enough to compete favourably with their counterparts globally."

Worthy of commendation is the Chairman of Maurid Group of Schools, Dr. Godwin Umontuen, for his foresight and investment in education, and for being a true patriot who cares about the development of the state and country.

His massive investment is interwoven with love and patriotism for the country at the centre. It is selfless, with clear intention to train and equip health professionals needed to provide healthcare services for mankind.
