What does a ‘red flag warning’ mean?
The news has been full of references to “red flag warnings” related to fire conditions in Southern California. But what does that term mean?

“While Red Flag Warnings do not predict fire starts, they do highlight a dangerous environment favorable to rapid fire growth IF one does start,” the National Weather Service Los Angeles said in a social media post.

The agency has issued a “particularly dangerous situation red flag warning” from 4am (12:00 GMT) on Tuesday through noon (20:00 GMT) on Wednesday for parts of Los Angeles and neighbouring Ventura County.
